Folks, we are a month away from (no cliché this time, anyone thinking this is hype doesn't own a home, have a 401k, or a job effected by the credit crunch) the most critical election in the last 50 years.
We also are perhaps seeing the dying throes of a strategy that has moved this country to the right since Nixon: the death of the Southern Strategy:
If so, this election is a seismic event, almost no matter if it's a squeaker or a landslide.
Now, anyone thinking the party in power, the money in power, the people who's livelyhood is tied to being in power are going to go quietly into the night is dreaming.
The slime we are seeing, the "Obama-Man of Mystery" meme is the last bastion of a political strategy honed for generations by the Republican Party, from Lee Atwater to Karl Rove to Steve Schmidt, it's been the Republican handbook for every national election for over 40 years:

Besides the geographic strategy, the basis of the Republican handbook underlying methods comes down to a number of strategies all stemming from the same theme: Us vs Them. THEY (whomever they maybe) are NOT like us. They want to change my country, to take it away from me.
Name the issue: Gay Marriage, Abortion, Immigration, Affirmative Action, Race Relations...it's just a variant on the theme.
The reason it has been their playbook for 40 years is very simple: It works.
It has been shown, with analysis of electrical activity in the brain, people who say they are making a decision based on logic and rational thinking many times are voting from a more ancient brain function, again it's fear.
The next 5 weeks, that is only card that is going to be dealt from the Republican deck: fear.
And, here's the bottom line, I expect the polls to tighten. I expect the media to talk up a McCain comeback, to ask "How can Obama stop the slide."
I expect the usual trolls to come rolling in when that happens, and play the "I told you so" or "I'm really concerned" message.
Screw em. Screw the Polls. Screw the Pundits.
Time to trust in our candidate and in his team. Two years ago if anyone has said Barack Obama will win the nomination and will be 30 days out leading in more states and look ahead in the electoral college then Kerry did, we would have said No way, that's just crazy!
If someone had told you Obama would be leading in Florida, in Virginia, and closing in places like Georgia, you would have told them to pull the other one.
And against a decorated war hero, POW, a media darling?
But he did it, they did it.
They have not varied one inch from their game plan, and we are heading into the bottom of the ninth with a two run lead.
We all need to do all we can, call our friends, work the phones KEEP sending those checks; but, now is the time to see if this man can close the deal. Right now, it's basically up to Obama.
God bless him, If I were him, looking at the country he is inheriting the leadership of, and the state we are in, I wondering if HE is counting his blessings or not.
But, today, I have no doubt, He has run a campaign for the ages, and I trust him to take it home from here.
